Flemish Brabant to grant new subsidies for flood prevention.

The provincial council of Flemish Brabant approved new subsidy schemes to support owners who want to protect their homes against flooding in flood-prone regions. The new subsidies are for people who own a house in a location where other measures, such as water buffering and erosion control, have proven ineffective or too expensive The Flemish Environment Agency’s pilot project in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Beersel and Sint-Genesius-Rode contributed to this decision.
Analyses showed that about 170 homes are eligible for the scheme. Some example of measures to be taken: installing check valves, building dykes or retaining walls, installing removable stoplogs, installing barriers for an underground car park, etc.

In the future, the province will designate the areas where the subsidy schemes will be operational. Beersel, Sint-Genesius-Rode and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw will be the first 3 areas. The subsidy will amount to 75% of the proven cost of measures implemented, with a maximum of 7,500 euros for a private home and 10,000 euros for a building for collective use.
